This is Dr. Warren Seymour Wilkins, MD, husband of Evelyn Harrod Wilkins and father of Bobby & Warren, Jr.

The photograph was taken a few weeks before his death in 1961, after the christening of his first grandson, Charles Robert Wilkins, the baby in his arms, who is a parent himself today.

He was head of pathology at Howard University's medical school, and apparently quite highly regarded in his field. As I was only eleven years old when he died, I do not know or remember very much about him, except that he died at Christmas time, and his body was cremated.

One reason his funeral made such an impression upon me was that he was an enourmous man, whose shoes were special order, and his coffin was smaller than a shoebox. It was a shock that kept me away from family funerals for many years. The other impression was that of deja vu from seeing the same faces at the funeral who had been at his grandson's christening just a few weeks before.

As I look back, I guess he saw too many cadavers in his life to want to risk becoming a lab project himself.
