Palindrome - Buffalo, 1989
This is a group of
IGES
nerds at the traditional Tuesday Night
Banquet in Buffalo, NY. We had just come from a trip to the Canadian
side of Niagara falls. Seated left to right ...
We were all struck by the ethnic pattern that emerged from our seating arrangement - I am sitting between two Jewish women, software engineers for major aircraft manufacturers, and flanked by two Oriental women, computer and engineering scientists for their respective companies. Hence the name, Palindrome, which we all agreed conveyed the symetry of the image.
I think I had just gotten my promotion to Principal Engineer, or was about to go through the review process. In any event, I remember at the time that I was sensitive about my grade, and I was trying to figure out where my salary was in relation to these four women. I finally decided that I fell in the lower half of the salary curve.
We had the guy across the table shoot a few Polaroids - we removed the center piece from the table after looking at the first one, and this was the keeper. I sent the original back to have 4x5 prints made for all of us. There's another story from that night, about the tour bus passing through Canadian Customs, but I'll save that for the collection of pictures and stories from IGES trips.
