A girl named Wendy, one of the ones I met in DuPont Circle that
Summer of 1967. I remember her as a nearly platonic romance from
the days when I was still a virgin. This image was my first attempt
to make black and white prints from color negatives using special
paper for that purpose. The setting sun gave a red glow to her
skin and hair that was as vivid as any image I ever saw on acid.
The contrast with the green foliage was awesome.
After this session, late afternoon became my favorite time to
shoot, because of the color of the light. I spent years trying
to achieve the same "Old Masters" effect with studio
lighting. My first wife, Beth, insisted that I destroy the negatives
and prints of Wendy because she was jealous.
