Cover art from Squadron Publications book on the
Messerschmitt Bf 110, a twin engine fighter/bomber that was instrumental
in Operation Barbarosa, the German invasion of Russia in World War II. I
had absolutely know knowledge of or interest in this airplane until I saw
a piece of aviation art in a magazine that I just HAD to have. :-)
This is
a detail from a painting (click here for full painting) that
shows a schwarm of Bf 110s atacking B-17s of the 305th BG on the
ill-fated second Schweinfurt raid. I had never seen this twin-engine
fighter before, but I soon learned a lot about it.
Today, I have kits in 1:72 and 1:144 scale. The 1:72 is a Matchbox
"3 Colors" kit ... mine came in blue, green, and grey. I did it
with the wheels down as a "dust catcher", but I plan to do one
with the camoflage as in this painting. I think I'll do the 1:144 in
Desert Camo like the photo below of someone else's model.
