Dennette's Flight Simulators
A lot of my scale model projects are based on the flight simulators ("sims") I use on my PC. This
links the pages about the simulators, the planes, and associated models from my collection.
AOTP - Aces of the Pacific
This is a World War II sim based in the Pacific. (D'oh!)
You can fly a dozen different
American and Japanese planes. You can attack Pearl Harbor in a Japanese plane,
or fly a
TBF Avenger like
George Bush.
This one offers carrier takeoffs and landings.
- AH-64 Apache -
I have two simulators for this awesome helicopter gunship ...
Gunship 2000 (MicroProse)
This is still the better of the two, as far as I'm concerned. The mission recorder
lets you jump back into the action and improve your score!
- Apache (Interactive Magic)
I was really disappointed by this one. It was one of the reasons why I upgraded
from a 486/33 (Brucilla) to a
Pentium (Bast) because it ran Just
Too Slow. When I got it at full speed, I found that it was more like an arcade game,
with unlimited weapons and an unrealistic flight model. Bummer.
- B-17 Flying Fortress
The most involved and detailed simulation I have. In real-time, you start the engines,
taxi down the runway, take off, join formation, repulse fighters, bomb the target, and
return. You occupy all of the ten crew positions, and operate their weapons or controls.
Truly Awsome.
- Fleet Defender - The F-14 Tomcat Simulation
This is a Present Era sim. You fly the F-14 Tomcat against a dozen
Soviet and NATO built planes. You can also "fly" as the Guy In Back (GIB).
FOTI - Flight of the Intruder
This is a Vietnam Era sim. You can fly either an A-6 Intruder or an F-4 Phantom II
against MiGs. I paid $15 for it in a close-out bin, and it runs in
CGA mode in a window on Win95.
- Knights of the Sky
A World War I simulator that includes the Sopwith Camel and the tri-winged
Fokker DR 1. The map is lousy, but there is lots of terrain detail ... buildings
and clouds ... and the dogfight kills feature Instant Replays. The flight characteristics
of these "kites with engines" is interesting to compare with modern or even World War II
airplanes. Perfect for older, slower laptops. :-)
- Silent Thunder - A-10 Tank Killer II
This is a Present Era sim. You fly the A-10 Thunderbolt II against
various ground targets, dodging SAMs, MiGs, and Hinds.
SWOTL - Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe
This is a World War II sim based in Europe. You can fly a dozen different
American and German planes, including jets. This is my favorite sim, and it
has a really great mission recorder.
Aircraft for
Flight Simulator 98
When I first got Micro$oft's Flight Simulator 98, I went wild on the 'Net collecting
aircraft. Some of them had been converted from FS5, and there was an add-on for FS98 to
be able to import these massaged aircraft. Notice I keep saying "aircraft" ... that's
because I have everything from the Wright Brother's flyer to an autogyro, and historic
aircraft to boot.
