The Tells: asimov Meeting Isaac Asimov

Asimov and The Wiz This is a picture of me with Isaac Asimov, the science fiction writer. It dates from about 1981 at a SciFi convention in Rochester, NY. Beyond that, deponent sayeth nought.

2006-07-20 - OK ... it has come to my attention that some of you surfers don't know who this man is, and why I'd want to have my picture taken with him like The Guy on the Left (1998). Well, he's the guy who wrote the Foundation Trilogy, created the Three Laws of Robotics, and wrote many of the classic robot stories, including I, Robot and The Bicentennial Man, both of which have recently been made into films.

He was fond of saying, "I did not invent the word 'robot', but I did invent the word 'robotics'!" The last of the three times I met him was in Vancouver, BC, at Canadian Mensa's Annual Gathering in 1985 (?) ... he even remembered me from our previous encounter at a convention in Albany, NY, where his wife was the Guest of Honor, and he was just along for the ride.

In Albany, I spent a few hours with him in one of the hotel rooms with a half dozen other fans, listening to him compose limmericks based on our names. He also sang this song, sung to the tune of Home on the Range:

Oh, give me a clone, of my own very own,
With the Y chromosome changed to X.
And when I get home to my very own clone,
It will be of the opposite sex.

(Chorus)
Clone, clone of my own,
With the Y chromosome changed to X.
And when I get home to my very own clone,
It will be of the opposite sex.

There were other verses, but all I can really remember is the 8-part harmony of us singing the chorus many times.
