Well, I guess this is the last time I'll be doing this, and I'm not sure why I'm bothering, except some misguided attempt at closure. (See my letter to Newsweek.)
Tomorrow morning I say good-bye to my van, the "Amazing Grace" ... I've had it since 1992. It will be hauled away for a charitable donation to a cat rescue shelter.
Back in early December, I went to my first job interview in six months ... it cost me $60 for a parking ticket and fines because I did not pay it in time ... it was raining that day, and it blew off the windshield when I turned on the wipers ... I paid the $35 for the expired meter with the last bit of money in my checking account, but the state of Maryland still wants the $25 for not having paid on time ... they can pound sand.
The insurance on the van expired on December 22, and the registration expired on the 25th ... I didn't have the $340 to pay them ... because it was uninsured for the three days before the registration expired, I still owe the District of Columbia $150, even though I have surrendered the plates. So it will be gone, and I will still be $175 in debt from it.
The one person who offered $550 for it never called back after they looked at it ... because I drove it so seldom, the seals have dry-rotted, and it's leaking oil and coolant ... it will pass inspection, but it needs at least $2,000 in engine work to be "reliable" transportation that doesn't eat a gallon of oil every six weeks, so giving it to charity is my only option to clear the space in the garage for my sister to park her van, assuming she ever gets over her fear of driving into the underground garage ... otherwise, she can sell the parking space for $10,000 to some other shareholder in the building.
That's the other thing ... our parents' house was sold at a foreclosure auction on the 2nd of January ... the mortgage company bought it back from itself for $775,000 ... since we had changed the title on the co-op to my sister's name, they can't come after it to make up the difference.
My sister moved in around Xmas ... most of my stuff, including my bed and dresser, are in the living room now, and the sofa is too close to the TV for comfortable viewing ... all of my mounted photographs from 30 years ago are in the closet, and since she has the bedroom now, the only time I see my Wall of Star Trek Figures is when I open the door to tell her that she has a phone call.
Phone calls ... since she's been here, I've had three personal calls ... from Wilbert (my only remaining friend from high school), from Linda (who lives in Baltimore), and Brian (who called from Brussels, where he's been living the past few years) ... all of the other calls (for me, anyway) have been from bill collectors and a head-hunter who hasn't called back or responded to any of my email pings.
So ... all of my domain names and ISP storage are up for renewal, and I don't have the $120 for each account, so WiZ-WORX.com, WaterHoles.com, IGES5x.org, 366th.org, and HarrodJazzLegacy.org will all evaporate in a few weeks, and no one will be able to read this anyway ... you can still probably Google my name for a while and see my Wikipedia and MySpace pages ... they may never evaporate.
So why do I bother?
Just so that I can say one final time that my life sucks, and with my dying breath, I curse Bashah I. Lucas and Darryl Milton for the real estate scams that cost my sister her house and have made it impossible for me to get any kind of a job that requires a credit check, because a $800K foreclosure pretty much knocks me from consideration ... I figure that's why none of the head-hunters ever call back.
And now I bid you farewell, gentle reader ... it's been surreal!
