The Klingons say that the secret to achievement with any endeavor is the same: Practice 10,000 times.
To do something ten thousand times is easier than it sounds at first. It's not Easy, but it's not as Hard as it sounds.
Do the same thing one hundred times every week for one hundred weeks, and you've done it ten thousand times. That's one hundred man-weeks, or two years for one person.
Do the same thing ten times in a row ten times a week, and you've done it one hundred times. That's once every day and twice on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
Or do it only ten times a day every day for one thousand days. (That's two years, eight months, and twenty seven days, but let's be generous and say three years.)
You take it in baby steps and steps of tens.
You do it until you have done it ten times without stopping.
Then you start doing it ten times each day every day until you have done it ten times a week without stopping.
Then you start doing it ten times each week every week until you have done it for ten weeks without stopping.
Finally, when you have done it ten times a day, one hundred times per week, for one hundred weeks (every week, without stopping!), then you will have done it at least ten thousand times.
You can skip a day or a week occasionally, but if you go ten days in a row without doing it, you have either given up, or you should start counting again.
Some things you can start again after you've stopped doing them.
Some things you should forget starting over again once you've decided to stop doing them.
If you want to do something ten thousand times, think about doing it ten times a day, every day, non-stop, for a thousand days.
If you could do it for three years, and you haven't, you're probably never going to do it.
Once you have made the decision to stop trying to succeed at something, stop "flapping your arms in the air" give it up, get over it, and get on with your life.
That is all I have to say. -=DAH=- 1997-10-21
