Waiting for my flight to L.A. - Actually got here early enough to catch a 6:15 flight, but I'd already checked my bags, and didn't have time to let Warren, Jr know about the change. The visit with Mac went pretty well... We saw a candle-light parade last night, and today we saw the new Star Trek film. Best line was by Spock... "There is an old Vulcan saying, 'Only Nixon could go to China.'" It had its share of action, adventure, and suspense, and should sell a lot of popcorn. (I'm willing to see it a second time, but *not* for full price!)
Mac has spoken with Howard in the last few weeks, Michael has been busted for joy-riding. Howard is 21 and *still* doesn't have a drivers license because he can't pass the written test. He moved out of the house with Michael & Diane (& her new husband) a few months ago - num-nuts has had *his* license pulled forever for DUI. Mac has made it clear that Michael can't even count on him for bail, but if Howard decides to get his life together, Mac will help him out as a last resort. Diane is crazy... she won't fill out the notarized paperwork she needs to get a piece of his retirement (she changed her name, so he can't make it happen automatically), and she's even making noises about hiring a detective to track him down, for all the good it will do her. Mac wouldn't give Howard his phone number, or even tell him what state he's in, because he doesn't trust him not to tell Diane.
He's 47, and in many ways he's back where he was when I met him in 1968... alone, and just starting his first year of classes with G.I. Bill money. After 26 years in the service, the government considers him to be a Professional Soldier, which is not much of a recommendation in today's job market. He gave up his chance for Sergeant Major by trashing the head NCO behind the barracks over in Germany... his choice, but he sez the S.O.B. really deserved it, and he knew what it would mean.
