How much does it
cost?Well, that depends on what you want.
There are several options available you can pay by the month, or you can pay one time to cover perpetual storage.
The basic rate is $10 per month, payable in advance. The discounted rate is $100 per year. New customers (until 01-Jul-96) get the rest of 1996 for $50.
Special Introductory Rate - get the rest of this century for $250, i.e., until 31-Dec-99. (That's about $5 per month!)
Perpetual Campsites and Family Preservation Societies are available for $1,500. For this price, you never pay for storage again ever. What happens is that your fee is invested by the corporation, and the principal is never touched. The corporation takes the annual dividend as the fee for keeping your archival data available. Assuming a conservative 5%, that comes to $75 per year.
So, how do you know that there will be a corporation or a Virtual Water Holes in five or ten years?
Ego. You've seen how much of my life and my family is archived here. To take your money and run away, I'd have to abandon all of this, too. Do you really believe someone with my ego is going to suddenly disappear from the Internet? I don't think so!
If you would like to use the URL of a Perpetual Campsite and have your HomePage referenced from it, that's up to the owner of the campsite. I have campsites for my first and last names, and will list the URL of anyone who shares my name as a personal favor. I consider these pages a resource, which I am happy to share because I know that changing an address in Cyberia is even harder than it is in The Real World.
Bottom line for the price of a marble tombstone, I'm selling the same kind of immortality with a better guarantee. If your marble tombstone is damaged, someone must pay to replace or repair it. With Virtual Water Holes, your data is archived on Compact Discs today, and migrated to whatever technology becomes most cost-effective in the future. Backups and restoration are performed automagically.
The only thing that could happen is that the world and civilization as we know it should come to an end. As long as there is an Internet, your Web pages will be available from "http://www.waterholes.com/YourNameHere", even after you and I are both dead and buried. But we will never be forgotten!
